Having found that the single image of a person was not a rich mine for me, I became attracted to pairings of unlikely people. First I would wonder who interested me - usually a flawed public figure - then hunt around for a complimentary pairing - I can’t say exactly why these pairings work for me, their unlikeliness, mainly.
I need to like something about these people. There was a grizzly photo of Gove with his legs apart and a manically impish expression on his face. The
painting of Maria-Theresa, by contrast, was ravishing in its strange beauty, beautifully painted by the master.
